Glasgow North East: Willie Bain, Labour. Standing up for Glasgow.
Just back from the STV studios where the four main candidates cross–examined ourselves in heated spirits.
In a slightly peculiar manoeuvre, the SNP man decided to throw a two-pound coin at me. I was thinking a question might be more likely, but there you go.
Amazingly, he vigorously defended the decision to scrap the airport rail link and the loss of up to 1,300 jobs. I thought he’d want to stand up for Glasgow, but he seems he wants to be Salmond’s man in Springburn.
Earlier, I met with Andrew Adonis, the Secretary of State for Transport, to discuss the importance of good transport links to and from Glasgow. He got the train from the centre of town up to Springburn.
Like me, he was angered by the SNP’s decision to cancel the rail link. If elected I will do all I can to fight the SNP’s decision and stop them ripping of Glasgow in the future. I oppose the cuts in housing and regeneration in the SNP’s draft budget for next year and I believe that Glasgow should get a metropolitan supplement, as Edinburgh does and is proposed for Aberdeen. The SNP cannot continue to rip off Glasgow. It isn’t a by-election slogan as the SNP try to brush it off: it is a tragedy for our city.
Harriet Harman also joined the campaign this evening and was out knocking on doors with me – first with the cameras, and then just the two of us later on. We stopped for a quick coffee in Dennistoun.
It really was all hands on deck today. Tomorrow I’ll be out and about again from first thing to late.

Would that £2 coin be to help with your bus fare to your place of work in Hammersmith as its a bit far to cycle fro glasgow NE.
Loss of 1300 jobs? It was 1000 jobs in your last post Willie.
Numbers are good Willie but you've got to stop plucking them out of the air.
If elected I will do all I can to fight the SNP’s decision and stop them ripping of Glasgow in the future. If you want GARL, more in the housing and regeneration budget and a metropolitan supplement what cuts are you going to propose elsewhere in the fixed and finite Scottish budget to fund these items? Number's Willie, numbers.
Alternatively as an MP you could speak to Gordon and get him to increase the fixed Scottish block grant to pay for them since there isn't enough money in it at the moment. However I don't think you'll get much joy there as he's managed to run up the biggest budget deficit ever while pouring unbelievable sums into propping up his pals the bankers and their banks.
In the interview Mr Bain made the ludicrous assertion that the people of Glasgow NE will be concerned about the cancellation of the GARL and rattled on about 20jobs being lost. Whilst the loss of any jobs is not be sneered at, many more have have already created by the Scottish Government and if the community is as deprived as we are led to believe would they really be major candidates for flying from Glasgow Airport and would they care a jot about having the rail link?
Give us some numbers please!
Your a fraud Willie and your liars are being exposed every other day.
What were you doing for the last ten years Willie?
Why didn't you ask Michael Martin to setup a constituency office?
Didn't the thought occur to you or were you on the Labour gravy train south to London?
Which party supports these policies?
New Nuclear Power
Trident Renewal
Iraq War
Afghan War
Privatising Royal Mail
Privatising Schools
Privatising NHS
PFI
Post Office Closures
Abolishing 10p Tax
Refusing Gurkha's entry to UK
Welfare Reform
Council Tax
Abolishing Scottish Regiments
De-regulation of the Banks
No Scottish Specific Airgun Legislation
"it is a tragedy for our city."
I'm confused, why didn't Labour create this when they were in power for EIGHT years?
Why are you campaigning on matters devolved to Holyrood, we are electing you for Westminister.
Why are you lying about living in Glasgow North East when you work in London, was that the closest University you could find employment at or was it the case that you are indeed a politican and have been a prospective candidate for years, acting as Labour secretary and Michael Martin's election agent.
How can we possibly trust you?
Willie,
"In a slightly peculiar manoeuvre, the SNP man decided to throw a two-pound coin at me."
Is this a first on the telly?
We all know that the SNP like to throw money away on political stunts but Mr Kerr's demonstration of money throwing was bonkers even by their swivel-eyed standard!
I missed it, will try and catch up with the STV player.
Was Bain asked to explain his silly ripping off Glasgow rubbish, John Swinney gave Charlie Gordon the opportunity to get GARL by asking him were the budget would be cut, cue Labour tumbleweed.
Can Mr Bain confirm if he is the same William Bain quoted in this Guardian article from 2005, speaking out against workers' rights, and employment protections of the 70s & 80s:
http://www.guardian.co.uk/politics/2005/sep/26/labourconference.labour9
'William Bain, from Glasgow NE, was jeered when he claimed the call amounted to a "return to the employment practices of the 1970s or '80s".
Urging delegates to be realistic, Mr Bain said: "We don't want to see the party bounced back into a shift to secondary action. It wouldn't do anything to solve this dispute. Let's learn the lessons and go forward as a movement, not back."'
Secondly, can Mr Bain confirm at how many addresses, and in which local authority areas, he is registered as a council tax payer?
What are your views on workers' rights Willie?
You and your party are a disgrace to the constituency you have let down so badly for 74 years.
Shame on you.
Some questions for Bain..
*1: Why is Labour fighting a Westminster by-election on devolved issues when the biggest threat to Labour is a Tory government?
*2: Why is it only now that Labour has come out fighting hard on knife crime when Glasgow under Labour had the worse knife crime in Western Europe?
*3: Why does Gordon Brown not support your ill thought out mandatory sentencing for those caught carrying a knife? Think about it real hard Willie?
*4: When ERAL was ditched by the SNP in Edinburgh, why did Labour not accuse the SNP for "ripping Edinburgh off"?
*5: You relentlessly say you are proud to come from springburn ,Well no matter the area I think we are all proud where we come from so what makes Springburn any more special than say somewhere like Perth? Are you trying to justify Labour's legacy of rot and deprivation in the area as something to be proud off?
*6: Don't you think you are just a little obnoxious clown with a labour rosette spewing out lies in order to hide the real culprits for the deprivation, poverty, crime and social breakdown in Springburn who are Glasgow city council and the Labour party?
Another question Willie.
Why does your article end with "posted by Scottish Labour"?
I thought this was a Westminster by-election?? Ah I should had known that all the negativity sound bites were of Iain Grays making.
Time again perhaps to remind Mr Bain that Glasgow City Council receives £2,517 per person from the Scottish Government, compared to Edinburgh which receives £1,755 (£762 less) per head than Glasgow and Aberdeen which receives £1,729 (£788 less ) per head than Glasgow.
Yet although it gets more money, Glasgow spends a smaller proportion of its budget on education than any other council despite having the worst educational record in Scotland.
Is any journalist ever going to pick Willie Bain up on this abd if not why not?
Kerr made the mistake of not holding the coin up first before throwing it. Bain's self-induced myopia about the state of Glasgow NE would have have evoked the response, 'whits that?', then Kerr couldn't have been blamed for denying him the information.
Oh dear it appears that the Labour Party have adopted the policy of grievance that they have so oft accused the nationalists of.
A tad hypocritical methinks.
Written by John Parks, I imagine...
You keep going willie you are going to be the next member of Parliament for Glasgow North East....
well done!
Willie,
Why bother having access to a blog when you don't answer any of the outstanding questions about Lord Martin and your part in his downfall?
When Gordon Broon came toGlasgow to offer you his support why did he go to Langside? You should have told him he was outside the constituency.
