David Maddox: Was the Labour Party trying to tell Gordon Brown something?
M People's Moving on Up sounds pretty uplifting when you're a party staring defeat in the face, but on closer inspection it is an odd choice of song to play Gordon Brown off the stage with, perhaps in more ways then one.
Read for yourself:
You've done me wrong, your time is up
You took a sip (just a sip) from the devils cup.
You broke my heart, there's no way back.
Move right outta here baby.
Go and pack your bags.
Just who do you think you are?
Stop acting like some kind of star.
Just who do you think you are?
Take it like a man baby if that's what you are.
[chorus]
'Cos I'm moving on up.
You're moving on out.
Movin' on up.
Nothing can stop me.
Moving on up.
You're moving on out.
Time to break free.
Nothing can stop me,
Yeah.
They brag a man has walked in space,
but you can't even find my place.
Mmm there ain't nothing (not a thing) you can do
'cos I've had enough of me baby being part of you.
Just who do you think you are?
This time you've gone too far.
Just who do you think you are?
Take it like a man baby if that's what you are.
[chorus]

There are a number of comparisons you could draw - not least that M People are past their best, used to be slightly cool and haven't released anything interesting since the late nineties...
Ach you're missing the point Mr Maddox, it's just noise - mood music. Not so long ago, the BBC were using a song in praise of heroin - Perfect Day - as a way of celebrating what the beeb was all about. Just hilarious nonsense, but people watched it to see Pav and all the rest. No one cared what the song actually meant.
Similarly with the Dougie Maclean dirge Caledonia that appeared as a TV ad to celebrate Homecoming - Lulu and Big Tam look as if they're just phoning their segments in from elsewhere (in fact didn't Lulu do her bit in London?). But it sent sentimental Scots happy to bed in sniffles and gave the rest of us a laugh, so it worked!
True, some things just cease to be funny - the Labour Party wrecked that great anthem 'Things Can Only Get Better' for the rest of us, damn them. But even that awful connection will pass.
