David Maddox: The Numbers Game (18) - serving up a bit of Nationalism

Another Yougov poll is out tomorrow (Thursday 25 June) with results from an interesting and quite topical question.
Along with the usual "how much do you hate Gordon Brown ?" will be a question on Andy Murray.
It asks the polled to say how they feel about the World number 3's description of himself as "Scottish and British."
Now clearly there may be some who think the marketing men have got at Britain's best hope of winning Wimbledon since Fred Perry cleared off to America after being told to take his balls elsewhere by the snobs who ran tennis. Appealing to all of Britain brings in a lot more money than just Scotland and it was noticeable that in his early days Mr Murray was less inclined to be seen as British and quite keen to promote his Scottish identity (as the picture top right illustrates).
But the question is interesting given the hullabaloo surrounding Scotland poor old mercurial cyclist Chris Hoy and his emotional tears (as pictured left) in Beijing as the Union Flag was pulled up in his honour during one of his three gold medal awards.
There was clear resentment among Nationalists that any Scottish sportsman may wish to call himself British and equal desperation among unionists that he became a symbol of their cause.
So for whatever reason Andy Murray has found himself in a much bigger match than the ones he will find on Centre Court over the next week or two.

My own feeling is that all this Scottish and British stuff is a waste of time. It depends on the context. I am quite at home in London, and Britain has given us variously the Beatles, the Stones, the Who and the Clash. Not to mention Monty Python and the Private Eye. Nothing about that will change, it is politically that I feel more Scottish then British and that is what the political debate is about.

I don't feel any necessity to parade my Scottishness it is a given fact. Obviously Murray thinks it's a given fact too. But seeing as how Andy Murray has done a lot of training in England and presumably feels a debt, I can understand how he would want them to share in any success too.

A lot of this stuff is just childish nonsense and I wish we could get away from it.

What you need to do, right, you give Mr Murray two tennis balls - one with a saltire painted on and a wee picture of Alex Salmond stuck to it and another with a union jack and a pic of Gordon Brown attached. Whichever one he so chooses to rub against his supple inner thigh and bounce up on down on his stiff wooden implement shall be declared the winner. Simple.

If he gets beaten in the next round he's Scottish but if he wins in the final it will be Rule Britannia, Barmy Army and God Save the Queen and all who sail on her.

The intolerance of SNP members for people who share Andy Murray and Chris Hoy's sense of national identity is the very reason why natioanlism of any hue should never be the driving force in politics.

The smearing by Labour members of people who have a desire for independence and full and equal membership of the international community for Scotland is indicative of an intolerant form of British nationalism that is an unfortunate driving force in our politics.

My identity is shaped by Scottish, British and European inputs. First and foremost I'm a global citizen. I strongly believe in Scottish independence as I want to see an internationalist and progressive Scotland working closely with all our neighbours and tackling poverty at home and abroad. Having a sense of British identity is not a barrier to supporting Scottish sovereignty just as Scandinavian identity doesn't undermine Norwegian, Swedish or Danish sovereignty.

We should respect all identities in our society and celebrate diversity.
