Oxjam: Five must-see bands

Trapped in Kansas
[Trapped in Kansas]

As you'll have hardly failed to notice if you're a regular reader, this weekend's live music calendar in Scotland is dominated by Oxjam.

Like other multi-venue festivals, seeing all the bands you want to see is practically impossible without some sort of teleportation machine.

And since we don't want you to end up like Jeff Goldblum in The Fly, here are our top five picks (that definitely don't clash)...

Conquering Animal Sound
Edinburgh (City Café), Friday, 4.10pm
Play: Your Friends, Conquering Animal Sound

What we said: "Recalling the minimalistic dalliances of Scandinavian progressives Múm, CAS are quite unlike anything you’ll hear in Scotland today."

Meursault
Edinburgh (The Bowery), Friday, 10pm
Play: William Henry Miller Pt1

What we said: "Other than their ferocious schedule, there are lots of reasons to love this band. Last year’s Pissing on Bonfires, Kissing with Tongues was a superb mixture of structured songwriting and strange electronic noises."

Yahweh
Glasgow (Sloan's), Saturday, 8.40pm
Play: Laps(e)

What we said: "For a bedroom recording the Yahweh album is an alt-folk revelation, combining the wry lyricism of Arab Strap with subtle bursts of electronica and sampling."

French Wives
Glasgow (The Admiral), Sunday, 7.15pm
Play: Halloween

What we said: "Overflowing with melody, their songs flutter the heart strings with grace and vigour; swooshing from dainty canticle to pulsing anthem without the bat of an indie-rock eyelid."

Trapped in Kansas
Glasgow (The Admiral), Sunday, 11.45pm
Play: Carpathia

What we said: "The guitar lines bleed off in countless directions like dabs of watercolour paint, while the rhythm slinks through unfathomable shifts and progressions."

Oxjam in Glasgow: 102 bands in two nights

Yahweh
[Yahweh. Photograph by Andrea Heins]

The sheer scale of Glasgow’s Oxjam Takeover is a daunting proposition. With over 100 bands playing a slew of venues across city in just 48 hours, the co-ordination required to maximise this two-day aural extravaganza will rival that of an Olympic standard synchronised swimming troupe.

Of course, in these capitalist climes where value for money is the whole enchilada, Oxjam’s west coast roster of tune-chugging rapscallions is the musical equivalent of a five fingered discount at Harrods - thrilling fun, with the added knowledge that you’re benefiting a greater good by not lining the pockets of an intolerably rich buffoon.

Mhairi Love, Glasgow volunteer Oxjam Regional Manager, says of the two day shindig: “In Glasgow we are spoiled for choice when it comes to music. It’s fantastic to be able to use the talent of local musicians to help raise so much money to fight poverty, and put on a great show at the same time. I’m really excited about our multi venue event. We have a great line up ranging from local talent to living legends.”

She’s not wrong. The parts that make up Glasgow Oxjam’s whole gleam with musical brilliance. A number of UtR favourites decorate this glittering roll call, including The Seventeenth Century, Barn Owl and the always exceptional Yaweh.

But really, Oxjam is not about the bands, the venues or, indeed, the price. No folks, [Ruffles up hair and puts on best Bob Geldof-at-his-most-stoic tone] this is about music and people uniting to make a difference in a world that can be achingly unjust. And, for this reason alone, you need to be there.

Radar recommends: 2 - 8 August

Is it us or does the start of the Fringe have a queer butterfly effect on the Scottish gig scene? Quite simply, there's very little that tickles the fancy of our ear canals outside thc capital this week. Still, like the dilligent scamps we are here at UtR, we've unearthed a few corkers amidst this midden o' dross...

Aberdeen
Colin Clyne, Eskimo Blonde
Friday @ The Tunnels | 8pm| tbc
Stonehaven's Colin Clyne takes his acoustic-driven indie-pop up the A90 to the bright lights of Aberdeen ahead of a five night run at the Edinburgh Festival. Established local favourites Eskimo Blonde turn out in support.

Bronto Skylift
Saturday @ Café Drummonds | 8pm| tbc
Come for the beats, stay for the tinnitus as Glasgow-based noise rockers Bronto Skylift unleash their aural assault on the Granite City's collective eardrums.

Fudge presents: Eric Euan, Deadloss Superstar, Bloodnut
Saturday @ The Moorings | 8pm | £3
Punk-metallers Deadloss Superstar join post-hardcore upstarts Eric Euan for a night of raucous rock on Aberdeen's dockside. Bloodnut's brand of death 'n' roll, influenced by veteran Swedish death metal outfit Entombed, adds a bit of bite to the undercard.

Dundee
All Day Event:
The Daze, Peg and the Bouffants, Colour Coded, Tango in the Attic, The New Times, Cha Cha Heels, Lord Luken, The New Tomorrow, The Loose Channels, The Myths, Root System
Sunday @ Doghouse | 5pm| £5
How many bands?! The Doghouse pulls out all the stops to host a shindig of epic proportions, featuring the cream of Tayside's music talent. Though quantity, rather than quality, seems to be the order of the day here, there's more than enough variety to keep even the most discerning muso happy.

Edinburgh

The Llama Farm presents: Yahweh, Debutant, The Plastic Animals
Tuesday @ Henry's Cellar Bar | 8pm | £4
Edinburgh's newest gig night may have a Peruvian feel but the ethos is about supporting great local talent. And to prove they're up to the task, they've only gone and booked two of our favourite acts in Yahweh and Debutant, as well as no-fi Edinburgh band The Plastic Animals.

The Ray Summers, The King Hats
Thursday@ Cabaret Voltaire | 7pm | Free
Swamp rock sludging is the name of The Ray Summers' musical game, while The King Hats adopt a more Holy Bible-era Manics approach to melody making.

Woodpigeon, Woodenbox with a Fistful of Fivers, Rags and Feathers
Friday@ Sneaky Pete's | 7pm | £6.50
Despite Woodpigeon's delicious sonic melee, it's Woodenbox with a Fistful of Fivers that truly capture the attention at this Edge Festival-affiliated showing.

Trampoline presents The Radiation Line, The Kays Lavelle, Adam Stafford
Friday @ Wee Red Bar | 7pm | £5
The first of Trampoline's August quadruple serves up the exceptional psychedelic babbling of The Radiation Line and a return to the live fore for heroic Edinburgh tunesmiths The Kays Lavelle.

Trampoline presents Jonnie Common, Animal Magic Tricks, Conquering Animal Sounds
Saturday @ Wee Red Bar | 7pm | £5
Small Town Boredom corroborator Jonnie Common spearheads a magnificent triumvirate that also includes the erudite minimalism of Conquering Animal Sounds.

**UtR's Gig of the Week**

Emily Scott, Rob St John
Saturday @ National Portrait Gallery | 5pm | Free
We're always harping on about Rob St John's elegiac mastery here at UtR so this being our gig of the week shouldn't come as much surprise. But the added bonus of Emily Scott's sumptuous tones and the National Portrait Gallery's refined setting transcends this unique showing into a glorious can't be missed extravaganza.

Glasgow
Final Fantasy
Wednesday @ Classic Grand | 8pm | TBC
Not Scottish but still incredible, Polaris Prize-winning troubadour Owen Pallet brings Final Fantasy's demure swoons to the Classic Grand cove.

Silent Front, Super Adventure Club, Shield Your Eyes
Thursday @ Captain's Rest | 8pm | TBC
Super Adventure Club's exhilarating goth-rock-schlock somehow has to play support to two experimental London outfits of very little cop.

Beerjacket, The Seventeenth Century, The Secondhand Marching Band
Saturday @ King Tut's | 7.30pm | £5
Cor, this is a good 'un. Beerjacket's toyish mute-pop is a sound to be cherished, while the prelude of The Seventeenth Century and The Secondhand Marching Band commands equal reverence.

Inverness
Bronto Skylift
Thursday @ Market Bar | 8pm| tbc
Bronto may have become Radar Recommends regulars over the last few weeks but this show is likely to be amongst the duo's most intense to date, as local lad Niall Strachan brings the noise back home to Inverness. Not to be missed.

Dead Boy Robotics
[Dead Boy Robotics: appearing at Limbo this week]

In the second instalment of our weekly gigs round-up we've broadened our scope beyond Auld Reekie to take in the best gigs wherever they are in the country. You'll notice that when we say 'country' we mean Edinburgh and Glasgow, but we did look for noteworthy gigs elsewhere without much success. Care to prove us wrong? Leave a comment below.

Fangs, Boycotts, Unicorn Kid and Findo Gask
Sun 5 Apr, King Tut's, Glasgow. Doors 8pm, £tbc
Since their ill-fated attempt to win the praise of Alex James and the rest of the 'expert' judges on a certain TV 'talent' show, Fangs are back doing what they do best: strutting their flamboyant electro-punk stuff. And there's plenty more on offer: the urgent energy of Boycotts, teenage electro whizz Unicorn Kid and the toybox 'tronica of Findo Gask. [NM]

Remember Remember and Matt Elliott
Mon 6 Apr, Cassette, Glasgow. Doors 9pm, £3
Whoever said sellotape couldn't be a musical instrument (and someone must have) never heard Remember Remember. Graeme Ronald crafts his delicate songs from whatever comes to hand, and does it live, in front of your eyes, with loop pedals! At this gig he's playing with cosmopolitan troubadour Matt Elliott. [NM]

Dananananaykroyd
Tues 7 Apr, Cabaret Volitaire, Edinburgh. Doors 7pm, £7
In all honesty, Dananana’s epileptic thrash-rock should only appeal to a niche fitting few. But so infectious are the Glasgow ensemble’s lives shows, not to mention last year’s brilliant Sissy Hits EP, that the buzz around their debut long-player Hey Everyone! has reverberated like a beehive in a megaphone. So, the day after the record drops UtR advises you get your derrière down to Cabaret Voltaire to find out just what all the fuss is about – you won’t be disappointed. [BH]

Limbo featuring Paul Vickers & The Leg, Electronicat, Dead Boy Robotics
Thurs 9 Apr, Voodoo Rooms, Edinburgh. Doors 8pm, £4
As ever, Limbo pulls out all the stops with this exceptionally coined line-up. Headlined by abstract proto-punk yelpers Paul Vickers (last seen by UtR dressed in full panda bear attire) & the Leg, the undercard juxtaposes renowned Berliner Electronicat’s effects-skewered swathes against the throttling two-pronged synth assault of local lads Dead Boy Robotics. In short, this is going to be one hell of an evening. [BH]

[Dead Boy Robotics - Cloud Sequence Animals]

**UtR's gig of the week**
This Is Music: Chutes, The French Quarter
Fri 10th Apr, Sneaky Pete's, Edinburgh. Doors 8pm , £3
A mainstay on the Edinburgh circuit for over two years, promoters This Is Music have put together a couple of Scotland’s finest young bands for this show. Teetering on the verge of a breakthrough for what’s seemed like aeons, Edinburgh five-piece Chutes are a maelstrom of taut melody and doom-saying lyrics that ignites the dancefloor like a guitar-slewing Molotov cocktail. More sombre but no less incessant, Tillicoultry quartet The French Quarter melt post-rock compositions with sloping, brush struck refrains to create a sound that, although innately Scottish, is utterly unique. [BH]

Glasgow PodcART presents Burning Codes, Robyn G Shiels and Yahweh

Sat 11 Apr, Stereo, Glasgow. Doors 7.30pm, £6
Like UtR, the people at Glasgow PodcART know a good thing when they hear it, and their podcast is an essential (and funny-as-hell) listen. Here they stage a showcase that spans the Irish sea, bringing you the best of Belfast (wistful one-time Snow Patrol cohort Burning Codes and the distinctive drawl of Robyn G Shiels) and Glasgow (one of the discoveries of the year in Yahweh, who we recently featured). [NM]

[Yahweh: The Wee Ending]

Aerials Presents: Great Eskimo Hoax, San Sebastian and Nacional
Sat 11 April, Cassette, Glasgow, £tbc
Combining Foals-y guitar interplay with winning harmonies, Great Eskimo Hoax are a pleasure to behold, and for this gig they are supported by two quality Scottish bands. San Sebastian make brooding, magnetic post-rock soundscapes, while Nacional bring their grandstanding indie home from SXSW. [NM]

Paper Planes, Foundling Wheel, Kung Fu, The Planes
Sat 11 Apr, Sneaky Pete's, Edinburgh. Doors 7pm, £4
Sneaky Pete’s has become the place to be seen in Edinburgh these days and this ear-bleeding evening of noise mongers is no exception. Glasgow outfit Paper Planes are the big draw; spanking out a splurge of party hard art-punk a la Yeah Yeah Yeahs. But, before that, the Foundling Wheel’s Ted Koterwas will penetrate nervous systems with an agitated clash of electronica that besieges like a category five hurricane. Supported by The Planes and Kung Fu, this is a night to be heard and not scene. [BH]

Introducing... Yahweh

Yahweh

It's easy to forget that Scotland has produced some of the most influential music of the past decade. While bands all around the world reference Mogwai or Boards of Canada or Belle & Sebastian, there are also fledgling musicians closer to home who owe these trailblazers a debt.

One is Lewis Cook, an 18-year-old singer-songwriter who recently released his first album under stage name Yahweh. Now a student in Glasgow, Cook grew up in the small Dumfriesshire town of Moffat, where his love of music began:

"I think one of the biggest inspirations for me was when I heard Mogwai's EP+6," he says. "It totally opened my mind to a whole new concept of music and was my first introduction to minimalism. Similarly, Boards of Canada's Music Has The Right To Children was a real revelation."

Yahweh's LP, Tug of Love, is, thematically at least, a double-sided work: the first half dedicated to Glasgow and the second to Moffat. For a bedroom recording it's an alt-folk revelation, combining the wry lyricism of Arab Strap with subtle bursts of electronica and sampling.

What's more, if you order a copy from their MySpace it comes in a brown paper package tied with string, surely adding to the likelihood of it becoming a collector's item in the not too distant future.

Yahweh: The Wee Ending

Yahweh: Laps(e)

Yahweh play Mono, Glasgow on 23 March, Stereo, Glasgow on 11 April and Sneaky Pete's, Edinburgh (with Meursault) on 20 June.
